Aciclovir belongs to a group of medicines called antivirulence antibiotics. They are used to treat a wide variety of infections caused by susceptible strains of the viruses, including cold sores (herpes labialis), shingles (herpes zoster), and chickenpox (varicella zoster). A virus that is usually harmless, these antibiotics work by reducing the activity of viruses' DNA polymerase, preventing the replications of the single cells (DNA). For cold sores, they prevent the replications of the virus from spreading further, reducing the severity and duration of symptoms.
Cold sores usually appear around the fourth week of pregnancy, but may appear anywhere from 6 days and 12 hours after oral therapy. If you have chickenpox (varicella) or cold sores (chickenpox) during the first 4 weeks of life, your doctor will likely start you on aciclovir every 4 weeks or every 6 to 8 weeks. If you have shingles (herpes zoster), your doctor may prescribe aciclovir for 2 weeks or until you reach the full recommended dose.
It is important to take these antibiotics as directed by your doctor, usually as prescribed by your doctor. Follow your doctor’s advice about the duration of treatment and dosage of the antibiotic. Continue to take these antibiotics as per their instructions even if you feel well. Stopping the treatment early may result in a relapse of the infection. Talk to your doctor if you have any concerns or questions.
